CompactHabit and Constructora d’Aro received the Greenbuilding Award from the European Commission for the university residence

CompactHabit and Constructora d’Aro received the Greenbuilding Award granted by the European Commission to the promoters of new buildings that stand out for their low environmental impact,  energy efficiency and technological innovation. The project, which has earned the maximum energy certification level, is also the first building in Spain with the Swiss Minergie certification, which ensures lower CO2 emissions and low energy consumption.

The awards ceremony was held on the 18th of April of this year in Frankfurt, and it honoured the project, which has a central communal covered courtyard which acts as a heat exchanger with the homes, allowing for 70.79% energy savings compared to buildings made with conventional systems.

In the new building category, the criteria of innovation and energy efficiency were born in mind when choosing the award-winning projects. At the UPC residence in the Sant Cugat campus, the annual energy savings is 607.6 MWh, which corresponds to:

• 597.8 MWh of savings through the Compact Habit modular building system and through the building’s overall conception.
• 9.7 MWh of savings thanks to the implementation of a micro-cogeneration system.

In the category of new building, where more than 1000 candidacies were submitted, the award winners were from six countries, namely Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Denmark and Spain.
